This year, Noise Action Week will coincide with the 15th annual International Noise Awareness Day, which takes place on April 28, 2010. This event is held in over 40 countries and aims to promote awareness of the dangers of long-term exposure to noise on the environment and human health.
International Noise Awareness day is sponsored by the Center for Hearing and Communication, which provides hearing health services to people of all ages who have a hearing loss and its mission is to improve the quality of life for these people.
On the day, professional organizations and community groups from around the country will provide free hearing screenings, give out information and hearing protection, and help to promote the importance of reducing noise in our lives. Publicity participants will hold press conferences in their local areas to discuss the problems of noise pollution, while press releases and public service announcements on television and radio stations will promote the message that noise hurts.
There are lots of activities you can get involved in, from taking part in the ‘Quiet Diet’ (this involves 60 Seconds of No Noise from 2:15 – 2:16 p.m., regardless of location), to contacting Community groups such as local hospitals, speech and hearing clinics or Universities to see if they need any extra help or taking part in town meetings, which will provide a forum for community residents to voice their concerns about noise.
